United Caps Recognised With Prestigious BLCC Golden Bridge Award

Award presented to the most successful Belgian and Luxembourg companies exporting to or trading in the UK

United Caps, an international manufacturer of caps and closures, today reported that it has been recognised with the prestigious Golden Bridge Award for its establishment of a successful manufacturing plant in Dinnington, Sheffield, UK. The factory was constructed of 10 acres of land, it accommodates 15 production lines and employs 34 talented staff members.

“We are pleased to be recognised with this prestigious award for our success with the Dinnington plant at the 22nd edition of this award presentation,” said CEO Benoit Henckes. “Production began in the third quarter of 2020 and is expected to generate sales in excess of £10 million in 2022, with growth expected to more than double in 2023. The plant is expected to reach profitability in just three short years and is producing 2 billion closures with plenty of runway for future growth. The plant is ultra-modern, highly energy efficient and features an innovative layout that is completely in line with our efficiency and sustainability goals.”

In its 22nd year, the award ceremony was hosted by the Ambassador of Belgium HE Mr. Bruno van der Pluijm at his residence in London. The event is in support of the Royal Belgian Benevolent Society charity which helps UK-based Belgians in need and Belgian students studying in the UK.

The United Caps Advantage
In applying for this award, United Caps cited the transformation of its activities from importing caps and closures to producing them in the UK, as part of the company’s Close To You promise. Not only does this important industrial investment in the UK deliver welcome employment to the Sheffield region, but it also provides sustainable growth through the manufacturing of tethered closures and of lower weight yet highly functional closures. The building and its production operations feature high-energy efficiency, also in line with the company’s sustainability heritage.

Henckes was accompanied by a United Caps delegation and thanked his team for their efforts during his acceptance speech. “We are honoured to join the hall of fame which includes a number of world-class companies that have been awarded the Golden Bridge Award over the past 21 years,” Henckes added. “The combination of food and non-food caps and closures, as well as our ability to produce bespoke closures, which represents about 50% of our business, has placed us in an optimum position to continue growing and expanding in the Dinnington location. This includes the possibility of expanding from our current 6,000 square metre facility to a larger plant of up to 20,000 square metres over time, bringing much-needed employment to this underserved region. We are grateful to the BLCC Jury for recognising the efforts our company has placed on expanding and growing the Dinnington plant, and thus providing more efficient and localised service to the UK market.”

Complete Success: Arburg at Formnext 2022!

Complete Success: Arburg at Formnext 2022!

  • Successful: Machines, variety of applications and expertise delight trade visitors
  • New products: Freeformer 750-3X and TiQ2 make their debut before the AM world
  • Comprehensive: Arburg Gadditive and innovatiQ product portfolio

As an exhibitor from the very beginning, Arburg once again featured prominently at this year’s Formnext. The Freeformer 750-3X and the innovatiQ printer TiQ2 literally took centre stage at the company’s stand where, placed on a rotating platform, they wowed trade visitors. Interest in the processing of high-temperature materials and soft materials was also very high, with the result that the experts from Arburg Gadditive and innovatiQ were fully booked for every day of the trade fair.

“Our presence at the trade fair was an impressive demonstration of the strength of Arburg Gadditive and the potential of our machines,” said Dr Victor Roman, Managing Director of Arburg Gadditive. “With our new Freeformer 750-3X, we can offer customers a whole new range of possibilities in terms of part size and cost-effectiveness. Our stand was very busy every day and we were also able to forge a lot of new links with companies on the lookout for new solutions in the field of additive manufacturing,” added a delighted Dr Victor Roman. Arburg’s many examples of components, including a wide variety of success stories from customers such as Tesa and Wilson, were a great source of ideas and inspiration here.

Freeformer 750-3X opens up new fields of application
In industrial additive manufacturing, the trend is clearly moving in the direction of high cost-effectiveness in day-to-day production, both in the manufacture of larger individual parts and in the production of multiple items in a single work cycle.

The Freeformer 750-3X, which is systematically designed to meet the requirements of the AM industry, meets precisely these challenges. Compared to the previous Freeformer 300-3X, its part carrier is around 2.5 times larger – with the same external dimensions – and the process is faster and more economical. In addition, the Gestica control system has been optimised for additive manufacturing in terms of process stability, part quality and build time.

Freeformer – the specialist in soft materials
When it comes to processing soft materials, Arburg used a large number of parts to demonstrate that a very wide range of shore hardnesses can be achieved with the Arburg Plastic Freeforming (APF). Specifically for this sector, there is currently a limited sales promotion with the Freeformer 200-3X “soft”. This machine has special equipment for processing soft materials and is also very attractively priced.

APF parts made of high-temperature materials
Another focus was the processing of high-temperature materials. A suitably equipped Freeformer 300-3X was exhibited for this purpose, as well as part of an aircraft cabin with various APF parts made of Ultem 9085, which is approved for aerospace applications. These post.processed lighting and ventilation components and the cup holder made it clear that the Freeformer can be used both to produce spare parts and to implement customised design requirements.

Shell and GE Additive Metal 3D Print Oxygen Hydrogen Micromixer at Energy Transition Campus Amsterdam

Shell and GE Additive Metal 3D Print Oxygen Hydrogen Micromixer at Energy Transition Campus Amsterdam

During formnext 2022, the global additive manufacturing event, Shell International B.V. and GE Additive unveiled the results of a joint design and engineering project – an additively manufactured oxygen hydrogen micromixer. This complex, non-functional, demonstration part, was printed in nickel alloy 718 on a GE Additive Concept Laser M Line system, installed at Shell’s 3D Printing CoE and Workshop, part of the company’s Energy Transition Campus Amsterdam (ETCA) in the Netherlands.

Shell maintains a leading 3D printing facility at ETCA in proximity to its scientists and partner companies to leverage additive manufacturing to prototype, as well as print functional parts. Having its own printing capability grants Shell’s R&D department the freedom and speed to create novel parts not available in the market, and solve new technical challenges in support of the energy transition.

Joost Kroon, an additive technology subject matter expert at Shell explains, “We really wanted to put the M Line through its paces and test it to its limits. Working with the GE Additive team we agreed to apply additive technology to reimagine a large, complex part, incorporating channels that would be difficult to manufacture conventionally. Working on an oxygen hydrogen micromixer aligns well with our companies’ strategies to play a positive role in the energy transition.”

Taking Inspiration from Geometry in Nature
Sonali Sonawane Thakker, a lead design engineer at GE Additive’s AddWorks team based in Munich was tasked with researching, designing and iterating the final design on display at formnext. Her brief was to design a part that was large, complex and incorporated channels for hydrogen and compressed oxygen. Sonawane Thakker was able to deploy the design freedoms that additive technology affords to rethink the structure and the shape of the part.

“Once we had settled on a part, our preliminary research showed that existing micromixers – also known as hydrogen-oxygen burners – are typically cylindrical, when conventionally manufactured, to accommodate the complex layout of tanks, pipes and nozzles. For additional complexity we chose a large conical design and also moved from a flat to a curved structure with an ISO grid to increase the overall strength, rather than a customary flat one.”

Sonawane Thakker sought inspiration from geometries and symmetry in the natural world, in particular the Fibonnaci sequence replicated in flowers and petals.

“With over 330 individual nozzles to incorporate in a circular pattern, I took inspiration from the ways pollen grains form in a flower head. The curved wall and the conical shape also reflects the shape of a petal,” she added.

Build & post-processing
Following feasibility reviews and iterations by Shell and GE Additive teams, the design and dimensions of the reimagined part were finalized and nickel alloy 718 was chosen as the material for the build.

Dimension of the part:

Height: ~296 mm

Diameter: 484 mm

Other: X ~ 429 mm Y ~490 mm

The build preparation and printing of the part on the M Line was overseen by Lisa Kieft-Lenders, team lead and Dennis Boon, a technician at the Shell 3D Printing Center of Excellence and Workshop.

“We have been involved in the project from the outset and have therefore been particularly close to this build and invested in its success. Given this is one of, if not the largest and most complex parts built on an M Line so far, we’ve remained in close contact with the GE Additive team in Munich and were supported, on the ground here in Amsterdam, by their local field service engineers. After some adaptions at the start, the build ran smoothly over nine days,” said Kieft-Leenders.

Post-processing was also completed at the Shell facility, and this was made easier through inclusion of powder removal holes, incorporated by Sonawane Thakker during the design phase. The part was completed in early November and sent to the GE Additive’s booth at the formnext. Following the event, the micromixer will be returned and put on display at Shell’s ECTA.

“We are confident in the M Line’s ability to perform. Indeed, we grasp every opportunity to test it to its limits with both hands. I cannot underestimate the power of collaboration and problem-solving during this project. It has brought together some great additive minds and the end result is not only visually stunning, but it is also substantial in size, complex and equally strong,” said Rob Dean, GE Additive’s AddWorks leader in EMEA.

Achieve Higher Efficacy of Retinol With Clariant’s Vitispheres R8

Achieve Higher Efficacy of Retinol With Clariant’s Vitispheres R8

  • Advanced drop-in encapsulated Retinol allows safe use of high concentrations
  • New data highlights ability to protect Retinol’s stability, promote better bioavailability, and enhance its skin penetration – for higher efficacy
  • Proven non-irritating formulation ingredient thanks to controlled release of Retinol

Cosmetics brands can now help more consumers to get the most out of introducing the benefits of Retinol into their skincare routines. Available worldwide, Clariant’s encapsulated Retinol VitiSpheres R8 makes it possible to protect the Retinol’s proven anti-aging potency and use higher concentrations safely in creams and serums.

“While consumers across all generations are increasingly seeking out Retinol for its benefit in reducing the appearance of wrinkles, it does have two drawbacks which dramatically lower its potential use. It can cause irritations when not properly dosed, and it is not stable in cosmetic formulations, meaning its properties can degrade prior to application. VitiSpheres R8 overcomes these challenges: it stabilizes the Retinol in formulations over time and enables a controlled, prolonged release into the epidermis skin layer where it will be most effective. Brands and formulators benefit from stable, well-protected Retinol which expands possibilities for higher efficacy products suited to a broad range of skin types,” comments Thomas Lukowicz, Clariant Global Application Development Manager.

Clariant’s unique multilayer encapsulated Retinol is an easy-to-formulate, drop-in solution for formulators to deliver high molecule charges without compromising skin.

In VitiSpheres R8, Retinol molecules are uniquely held within the solid-lipid core of a leak-proof multilayered capsule. The patented system protects the Retinol from oxidation, ensuring very good stability in formulations compared to benchmark systems. This maintains bioavailability of the Retinol, and reduces the potential loss of beneficial properties both during formulating as well as over a long shelf life.

Importantly, Retinol is only released on skin contact at skin temperature. The encapsulated ingredient melts on application and opens the pathway for Retinol to be released smoothly and gradually into the skin where it will be most effectively taken up, avoiding the potential of a sudden irritation-inducing Retinol overload even at high concentrations.

Its superior Retinol penetration compared to other systems and skin tolerance is confirmed by data – supporting both higher efficacy and the possibility to use higher concentrations in formulations.
