The Importance Of Acrylic In Cosmetic Packaging

Chen Hsong Holdings Ltd.

The Importance Of Acrylic In Cosmetic Packaging

Acrylic (PMMA) also known as the trade name plexiglass is a transparent thermoplastic often used in sheet form as a lightweight or shatter-resistant alternative to glass. It was first produced in 1928 and was brought to market five years later by Rohm and Haas Company. It is generally considered one of the clearest plastics on the market.

Injection Molding Process:

Material Preparation:
Usually acrylic (PMMA)’s water absorption rate is between 0.3-0.4% but for injection molding it must be at a humidity below 0.1%, usually 0.04%. The presence of water makes the melt prone to defects such as bubbles, gas streaks, and reduced transparency, so drying treatment is required. The drying temperature is generally around 80-90 °C, and the drying time is recommended to be more than 3 hours.

Mold & Gate Design
The mold temperature can be around 60°C-80°C.

Sprue diameter should match with the inner taper, the best angle is 5° to 7°.

For a wall thickness of 4mm or more, the angle should be 7°, and the diameter of the sprue should be 8 to 10mm.

Overall length of the gate should not exceed 50mm.Diameter of the runner should be 6-8mm for products with wall thickness less than 4mm.

Depth of the diagonal, fan-shaped and tab-shaped gates should be 0.7 to 0.9t (t= wall thickness), and the diameter of the pin gate should be 0.8 to 2mm, choose the smaller diameters for lower viscosity.

Melt Temperature
The temperature should vary between 210°C and 270°C, depending on the actual situation. First, withdraw the back seat of the injection molding machine so that the nozzle leaves the sprue bushing, and then manually plasticize and inject. (air injection).

Injection Speed
Rapid injection can be used, but to avoid high internal stress, it is recommended to use multi-stage injection, such as slow-fast-slow, etc. When injecting thick acrylic products, it is recommended to use slow speed to ensure product stability.

Acrylic – The “Plastic Queen” in the Cosmetic Packaging World
In recent years, the e-commerce industry has developed rapidly and consumer demand for women cosmetics from celebrity brands have tripled. In the packaging industry, cosmetic packaging has become one of the hottest packaging categories. Consumers at home and abroad are paying more and more attention to the quality and texture of not only the product but also its packaging. Packaging manufacturers now play an important role as more attention is brought to the visual impact that appearance brings to end customers.

Acrylic cosmetic packaging has good optical performance and soft light transmission. Even after dyeing, it can maintain good light transmission and good color rendering effect; it has high surface gloss and surface hardness. The chemical properties of acrylic allow it to be completely transparent while remaining hard and highly resistant to scratches and impact.

Recommended Injection Molding series:

Spark Series ( All Electric)
Chen Hsong’s SPARK series of all electric injection molding machines takes into account the high speed and high response needed for ultra-thin products as well a low-speed stability and long-term high-pressure control of ultra-thick products.

For Appealing Design And Smart Functions: Plexiglas Molding Compounds Enhance The Design Of Household Appliances

Brand PMMA from Röhm is a proven material used for surface refinement, displays and luminaire design
Special molding compounds in neutral-gray dyes create a black-panel effect that can be used for seamless designs for hidden displays
PLEXIGLAS supports high-quality and sustainable product design
Household appliances are far more than useful aids that simply complete their tasks in the background. The expectations for functions and aesthetics are constantly increasing, while the trend toward open kitchens is ensuring a growing demand for representative equipment with cutting-edge devices that also look good. Coffee machines, refrigerators and ovens, vacuum robots and dishwashers are all becoming “smart” thanks to digital functions, while complex designs that use high-quality materials mean these devices are also more appealing to look at. PLEXIGLAS® molding compounds can contribute here in many different ways.

PLEXIGLAS molding compounds enhance all types of household appliances. Manufacturers can enhance their devices with high-gloss surfaces, or illuminated areas and edges, include illuminated control elements or displays with a black-panel effect that are seamlessly and invisibly integrated into the device housing.

PLEXIGLAS molding compounds provide inspiration for effective light design
Thanks to advanced LED technology, light is gaining importance as a functional element and a design factor for emotional designs. The appliances use light signals to communicate with their users, as can be seen on a coffee machine, with a flashing symbol informing the user that it is currently making a large latte macchiato, or the washing machine that shows its progress in a similar manner.

PLEXIGLAS molding compounds are a proven material for illumination applications as they possess unique transparency and light-guiding properties. It can be used to make illuminated buttons and keys, or backlight symbols, logos or decorative areas in color. Combining mechanical and optical functions in one component reduces costs and provides added value to the design.

Röhm’s brand PMMA comes in different versions which are suitable for edge lighting and back lighting with LEDs. Light-scattering variants are also available. These products create a pleasant, homogeneous light without any undesired differences in brightness, known as light hot spots. No additional scattering films or microstructures need to be applied to components made from this special molding compound to ensure even light extraction over the entire surface.

PLEXIGLAS makes it possible to create displays with a black-panel effect
Digitally connected, smart household apppliances that can be controlled by an app require displays and sensor covers. Larger, color displays are also in demand, for example on white goods. Crystal clear PLEXIGLAS molding compounds are ideal for this, as they provide maximum transparency for vibrant display covers that show the information clearly and without any distortion.

Röhm has also developed PLEXIGLAS molding compounds in neutral-gray colors specifically for displays with black-panel effect, as is common on smartphones. These enable displays – even those with a touch screen – to be hidden behind high-gloss black covers. Only when the device is on does the component turn into a colorfast display. This product meets the ongoing trend towards dark covers and seamless design in household appliances, particularly since white appliances are no longer just white.

PLEXIGLAS molding compounds enhance surfaces
Manufacturers of household appliances can use PLEXIGLAS molding compounds to enhance the surfaces of their products. There are various different PLEXIGLAS® variants with different surface qualities, depending on the desired appearance and feel, for example, high-gloss or velvety matte. As the molding compounds are also ideal for co-extrusion, a crystal clear top layer of PLEXIGLAS can be placed on top of other materials to create a fascinating 3D effect with a sense of depth. Because the brand PMMA is initially completely colorless, it can be dyed in any color to manufacture colored housings.

PLEXIGLAS supports sustainable product design
PLEXIGLAS housings are not only appealing from an aesthetic standpoint, but are also robust. Furthermore, the material is also easy to maintain, resists many cleaning agents and does not discolor upon contact with food. After all, household appliances should work for a long time, and look good equally as long. “PLEXIGLAS® is sustainable by design,” emphasizes Siamak Djafarian, Head of the Molding Compounds business unit at Röhm GmbH, going on to explain: “Our PLEXIGLAS contributes to sustainable product design as it is a very durable plastic that retains its high-quality appearance without yellowing or becoming brittle. It therefore meets the highest demands placed on the brand quality of household appliances.” When reliable technology, beautiful design and high-quality materials, such as PLEXIGLAS are combined, a household appliance has what it takes to become a classic design piece.

Materials For Contemporary And Sustainable Design

PLEXIGLAS molding compounds and the K trade fair – an inspirational combination spanning 70 years Circular economy at the heart of the trade fair: PLEXIGLAS molding compounds are sustainable by design Growing portfolio of standard and special molding compounds for the automotive and lighting industries, as well as the household goods sector Having started out as a small consumer trade fair, K has grown into the world’s leading trade fair for the entire plastics industry – and is celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2022. Röhm GmbH – with its PLEXIGLAS molding compounds – is one of the pioneers who have regularly exhibited at K since its inception in 1952. “K has always been an important forum for us to meet our customers and partners and discuss innovations and inspiration,” says Siamak Djafarian, Head of the Molding Compounds business unit. “And just like the trade fair, we have also continued to develop alongside technological progress.” Standard and special molding compounds enable many innovative applications in the automotive and lighting industry and household goods sector. The business unit will present its growing portfolio of these products at its stand in Hall 6, Booth E 29, at K2022, October 19-26 in Düsseldorf.

Visitors to the booth can see the custom materials for various application areas for themselves. For example PLEXIGLAS, the brand polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) from Röhm is an extremely diverse plastic that offers excellent light transmittance and extraordinary weather resistance. It is also lightweight, has the highest surface hardness of any thermoplastic material, can be processed using all thermoplastic methods, and enables high reproduction accuracy. With 15 production sites around the world, Röhm is a reliable global partner and is actively expanding its capacity, both in production and in technical service in all relevant regions.

Saving resources with PLEXIGLAS molding compounds
Climate protection and the circular economy are two of the main topics at this year’s K. “These challenges require a global effort. We assume responsibility for our climate, society and the limited natural resources we have,” says Dr Hans-Peter Hauck, Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Röhm. Sustainability is an integral part of Röhm’s business strategy. As one of the world’s leading manufacturers in the methacrylate business, Röhm has set itself the goal of climate-neutral production and zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. A first milestone on this journey is the “Track 2030” initiative with the goal of significantly reducing carbon dioxide emissions, which result from the production or sale of Röhm products.

“High-performance plastics can make a significant contribution to managing the challenges we face,” explains Hauck. PLEXIGLAS is sustainable by design: PMMA molding compounds are not only easy to recycle, but their extraordinary weather resistance means that they are very durable, and thus help to save resources. In addition, PLEXIGLAS® molding compounds are integral to sustainable applications.

Focus topics from PLEXIGLAS molding compounds at the K 2022 trade fair:

PLEXIGLAS Optical HT: Lighting solutions with higher heat deflection temperature
Be it for low-profile components or increasingly powerful lights, PLEXIGLAS molding compounds have kept pace with progress in lighting technology for decades. PLEXIGLAS® molding compounds can be used to produce completely transparent light covers, as well as light covers with light-guiding structures and those that scatter light for a broad range of purposes. With Röhm’s latest special molding compound PLEXIGLAS® Optical HT, the days of compromising between high optical quality and suitability for high long-term service temperatures are gone. PLEXIGLAS Optical HT covers both requirements, making it ideal for contemporary product design, such as lenses for high-performance LEDs and long light guides.

PLEXIGLAS molding compounds: Taillights as a brand statement
For almost the same length of time that K has welcomed visitors, PLEXIGLAS molding compounds have been used in covers for taillights. The material replaced glass covers in the mid-1950s. Over time, the small, functional lights have been transformed into complex components for brand-typical signature lights – and Röhm has also continued to develop its customized portfolio of special molding compounds to meet this demand. The company produces transparent molding compounds in signal colors or crystal clear variants, as well as versions with light-scattering properties. The scattering behavior and transparency vary depending on the product grade. The molding compounds are easy to process, even in innovative procedures such as laser welding – a process that has increased freedom of design when it comes to taillights, enabling angular components to be combined with minimal joints.

Impact-resistant PLEXIGLAS special molding compounds: Robust materials for vehicle fronts
The design of vehicle front ends is also changing, with long light guides, high-gloss panels and logos replacing chrome. A vehicle front requires particularly robust materials that have been impact-modified. For illuminated applications, the PLEXIGLAS Resist AG 100 special molding compound meets both optical and mechanical requirements. In high-gloss panels at the front of the vehicle, PLEXIGLAS Hi-Gloss NTA-5 is a robust and resource-efficient alternative to components that need additional painting. Its high weather resistance properties ensure a sophisticated appearance that lasts – one that has long become part of vehicle design with other non-transparent pillar covers.

PLEXIGLAS for household goods: Attractive design and smart functions
The aesthetics of household goods are an increasingly important factor, particularly as kitchens are increasingly used as additional living areas. PLEXIGLAS® molding compounds upgrade the appearance of all types of household goods – whether it is used for permanently high-gloss surfaces, for illuminated designs or operating panels, or for displays with black panel effects. These integrate almost seamlessly into the housing: When the appliance is off, only a high-gloss, black cover is visible; when it is on, the display shows images in full color. Visitors to K 2022 can see this effect for themselves at Röhm’s booth (Hall 6, Booth E29).

Dedication To Improve Quality And Performance

Dedication To Improve Quality And Performance

Facing more and more rigid and performing operative needs, the supply of quality moulds represents a fixed point to which it is indispensable to put side by side careful attention to the service and time respect of deliveries.

On the basis of this assumption, ALFA STAMPI from Adrara San Martino (BG), a well-known company operating in the field of design and manufacture of moulds for technical rubber articles with over 35 years of history behind it, is aware that quality can and must be constantly produced in a well-structured environment with trained people. For this reason, since the beginning of the year, it was deemed necessary to further reinforce the awareness and expertise of all human resources through a course consisting of a series of monthly meetings with a consultant aimed not only at improving the quality management systems in each department but also at achieving a wide-ranging growth process.

Among the latest developments, we present the mould evaluation sheet, a document capable of standardizing the perception of the offer between customer and supplier in order to optimize the quality/price rate of each request. Being always in line with the customer is not easy, very often the technical aspects do not coincide, and the price cannot be the only element to be taken into consideration during the assignment of a project. With this form, the offer is clear, complete and conceived in every detail.

In the light of the current complex situation, it is difficult to talk about product innovation; today more than ever it is the flexibility that makes the difference. Here are some data that emerge by analyzing the degree of difficulty of the moulds produced in the two-year period 2019-2020: 23% standard moulds, 32% medium and medium-high difficulty, 45% high and high complexity. This diversification has allowed us to be present and competitive on several fronts.

Well On The Way To Fully Automatic Extrusion Lines

Well On The Way To Fully Automatic Extrusion Lines

Easy operation combined with maximum efficiency in production, reproducibility and high product quality are the goals of artificial intelligence, fully automatic line components and Industry 4.0. The extrusion specialist battenfeld-cincinnati offers specific modules for sheet, film, pipe and profile extrusion lines that support exactly these goals. The company’s CTO Dr. Henning Stieglitz is confident that: “Even though fully automatic extrusion lines are still a dream of the future; we are already offering many intelligent modules that clearly simplify every day’s production routine”.

Fast product changes have long been an integral part of the daily routine in all segments of plastics processing. Extrusion companies must respond to specific demands from customers, be able to deliver smallest orders and minimize setup and cleaning times in order to operate economically. battenfeld-cincinnati offers the right automation components to meet precisely these requirements. In pipe extrusion, the fast dimension change (FDC) system has been well established, by which pipe dimensions can be changed during production within a wide range of different diameters. Virtually at the push of a button, this system changes the melt gap on the pipe die as well as on all downstream aggregates, from the calibration and cooling units right down to the haul-off and automatic cutting saw. In addition to very easy operation without time-consuming machine setup work, the reduced amount of production scrap is another significant advantage. Only a short cone piece is produced, before the good quality is produced again.

There are also some practical helpers for sheet and board extrusion lines: for example, the combined operation system for the extruder, melt pump, roll stack and downstream equipment in sheet extrusion makes the start-up significantly easier. This is a big advantage especially in complex multi-layer lines. Once the start-up sheet has been inserted, all machine components can be started simultaneously by pressing one button. The entire start-up process can be carried out by a single operator. This saves both time and costs and reduces start-up scrap as well, to enhance sustainability. In addition, battenfeld-cincinnati has developed a module for sheet extrusion lines which adjusts the selected sheet thickness automatically when changing products. Without the operator intervention, the roll stack and line speeds are adjusted accordingly via the control system. Another module for the production of the smoothed semi-finished products is the roll compensation system. During the production of sheeting, adjustments of the roll temperature may be necessary, which invariably also leads to a minimal change in the roll diameter. The roll compensation system corrects this change and handles the continuous automatic readjustments of the roll nip.

In PVC processing, the auto-stop for semi-automatic rinsing of the extruder and die has repeatedly proven itself. This process is triggered by the operator in the extruder’s control system. In this process the feeding of the production material is stopped, and the melt pressure at the screw tip is monitored. As soon as the pressure falls below the set limit value, which means that the extruder has been emptied, the second dosing device with the detergent mixture is started and this mixture is fed in until nothing but detergent comes out of the die, at which point the extruder can be switched off. For PVC extrusion, battenfeld-cincinnati has also developed Steady flow, a device to minimize pressure fluctuations which, as part of the process, always occur in counter-rotating twin screw extruders. Steady flow continuously measures the pressure at the screw tip as well as the pressure difference from one screw rotation. During one screw rotation, the screw speed is then altered to almost completely compensate pressure differences. This minimizes pressure fluctuations and consequently pulsations in the melt flow to ensure a significant improvement in the quality of the semi-finished product.

“In addition to the modules, which make handling muche easier in everyday production, we have also revised the operation of the control system once more and implemented animated videos to assist all operators regardless of their native languages”, says Dr. Henning Stieglitz, pointing to yet another example of modules by which the extruder specialist supports its customers and is paving the way to fully automatic extrusion systems.

New Pipe Extrusion Line Concept Wins If Design Award 2022

New Pipe Extrusion Line Concept Wins If Design Award 2022

“Of course, continuous technical optimization of all machine components is part and parcel of our daily production routine. After all, we want to be ready at all times to meet customers’ needs as well as any changes in the market with modern, efficient concepts”, says Dr. Henning Stieglitz, CTO of the battenfeld-cincinnati group. From now on all individual components in a pipe extrusion line will also be presented with a modern, functional and, above all, uniform image. With its new design, battenfeld-cincinnati has won the coveted Design Award 2022 and thus impressively visualizes its expertise as the only supplier worldwide of complete lines from a single source.

The Industry Forum Design Award, already in existence since 1954, is awarded since 2011 by the association IF Industrie Forum Design e.V., Hanover. This year, battenfeld-cincinnati impressed the jury with its uniform “pipe extrusion line” design in the corporate colors in the category 1.22 “Industry/Tools” and thus won the first prize. At the K, the design will be officially unveiled and presented to the public for the first time. From January 2023 onwards, the design will be a part of the company’s products as standard, and all pipe extrusion lines delivered will appear in the uniform design and equipped with new functionalities.

Optimal accessibility and operation and easy cleaning options characterize the new design of all machine components. The lines are currently available in five machine sizes – for pipes with diameters of up to 63, 160, 250, 400 and 630 mm. All aggregates, from the extruder, the calibration and cooling unit, the vacuum tank up to the cutting device and the tilt table, are manufactured in-house by battenfeld-cincinnati with perfect technical synchronization to exclude all interface problems, and now also visually coordinated as well as integrated into the intuitively operated BCtouch UX control system.

Wm At K 2022 In Duesseldorf: Innovation Made In Switzerland

WM will participate with machine demonstrations – live and remote – and will present new thermoforming solutions, test results on new materials, interesting insights into the plastic industry and much more…

“Between now and October 19, we expect market dynamics to change and reconfigure in unpredictable ways, and new scenarios will open up ” said WM General Manager Luca Oliverio. “That’s why we are working on an exhibition mix that is as balanced and comprehensive as possible”.

“At our booth we will have our full sales force, one thermoforming machine in function for live demonstrations, and several interactions and insights – live, remote, and virtual.

This year we gained on 30% more exhibition space compared to the last edition in 2019, so that we can accommodate more visitors on our booth safely, without creating crowds when we run the machine.

We have also decided to prioritize comfort in the areas dedicated to negotiations with customers, equipping these spaces with workstations connected remotely to equipment in operation in different locations, based on what the customers want to see.”

But this “exhibition mix” will have further unfolding.

“In Düsseldorf we will also explore the themes related to new materials, and we will present the results of the production tests we are conducting on the new foam materials, new barrier monomaterials, etc. These trials were possible also thanks to the use of test moulds created in collaboration with our strategic partners,” Oliverio said.

“Another topic we will present at the K will be the performance improvements on our machines. For instance, I am thinking about the new version of our flagship thermoforming machine, the FC 780 E. It will allow for better mould adaptability, a subject that WM cares a lot about, and which saves customers significant investments in mould changes. The new version will also feature noteworthy improvements in software (i.e. easier human-machine interaction), rationalization, and aesthetics.

Then, we will also present a new improved stacking system (currently patent pending), that will shake up the performances on tilting machines.

But that’s not all. We will also talk about synergies, flexibility and choices in end-of-line automation.

From now until October we will post more information on our channels (website, Youtube, newsletter and LinkedIn). We encourage all the customers to follow us to discover what we have planned.”

Ineos Olefins And Polymers Europe Joins The Holygrail 2.0 Initiative For Recycling Plastic Waste

Ineos Olefins And Polymers Europe Joins The Holygrail 2.0 Initiative For Recycling Plastic Waste

INEOS Olefins and Polymers Europe have joined the Digital Watermarks Initiative HolyGrail 2.0* to significantly improve the sorting and recycling of plastic packaging waste.

The initiative aims to address and improve how plastic waste is sorted into different types, making the recycling of household plastic waste far more efficient. Although plastic packaging collection
rates are improving across Europe, challenges in sorting mean that recycled plastics are often a mix of types and grades, making the recycled product difficult for plastics converters to re-use.

The Digital Watermarks Initiative HolyGrail 2.0* is pioneering a ground-breaking technology. Digital watermarks are imperceptible codes which cover the surface of the packaging. They are around the size of a postage stamp, imperceptible to the human eye, but detectable by special cameras linked to high speed waste sorting systems.

The HolyGrail 2.0* initiative will provide the whole packaging value chain with a robust, cost-effective, and easily scalable system to optimise the sorting of post-consumer plastics packagingand improve the quality of the recycled product.

Joining the initiative reinforces INEOS’ commitment to creating a truly circular economy where all plastics can be properly recycled and reused in high-quality products, thereby reducing the carbon
footprint of plastic products and packaging.

This builds on the commercialisation of the INEOS Recycl-IN range of PE and PP products, launched in 2019, which provides converters with a complete portfolio of resins with up to 70% post- consumer recycled content and properties on-par with virgin polymer.

Rob Ingram, CEO, INEOS Olefins and Polymers North, says: “Partnering with HolyGrail 2.0 demonstrates our commitment to taking action across the value chain, to create a more sustainable future. It fits perfectly with the INEOS goal to increase recycling rates and the use of recycled materials back into everyday products. This is an exciting next step on our path to full packaging circularity.”

“Plastics are essential to our everyday lives. They keep our food fresh and safe to eat, and help us produce other day-to-day items, like our phones and our televisions. But we recognise and share people’s concerns – working together we can make the plastic economy more circular, and help to reduce plastic waste.”

Fachpack 2022: Constantia Flexibles Combines Recycling With High Packaging Performance.

Consumers and companies are putting more emphasis on environmentally friendly packaging. At Constantia Flexibles, sustainability has been a key guiding principle for a long time: With continuous investments in research and development, the packaging company is constantly launching new, sustainable product lines. At FachPack 2022 from September 27th to 29th in Nuremberg, Constantia Flexibles will present its new packaging innovations as well as long-established product lines.

Rising material prices and bottlenecks, as well as increasing expectations regarding sustainability, result in major challenges for producers and packaging manufacturers. Intensive research and development are therefore more important than ever. “Our investments in research and development are focused on producing packaging in line with circular economy principles. This way, we guarantee not only customized but also recyclable packaging solutions, thus helping our customers to bring more sustainable products and innovations to market,” explains Pim Vervaat, CEO of Constantia Flexibles. “We are particularly proud of our new sustainable innovations, such as the CompresSeal Solution or PERPETUA ALTA from the Pharma Division, with which we are promoting a more sustainable tomorrow,” says Vervaat.

EcoPressoLid: the compostable capsule sleeve
Constantia Flexibles’ EcoPressoLid capsule liner enables more sustainable coffee consumption: it is compostable, biobased, and perfect for sealing the top and bottom of compostable coffee capsules. The EN13432 certified material was awarded “OK Compost Industrial” by TÜV Austria in 2022. Especially its high oxygen barrier and good performance during the brewing process make it a sustainable and high-performing packaging solution.

CompresSeal: Lighter packaging promoting sustainability
Together with the Dutch film manufacturer Plasthill B.V., Constantia Flexibles developed the CompresSeal technology, based on a new type of micro embossing technology. The innovative embossing pattern allows the basis weight of polyolefinic sealing films to be reduced by up to 30%, while keeping the packaging thickness. This significantly reduces the CO2 footprint of packaging and raw materials consumption.

PERPETUA ALTA: Recyclable solution with high chemical resistance
The Pharma Division at Constantia Flexibles also researched and developed at full steam and launched a brand-new innovation this year. The polypropylene (PP)-based, recyclable mono-material solution PERPETUA ALTA features high chemical resistance to pharmaceutical products. Its unique selling point is the combination of sustainability and resistance, but also its lower weight and higher efficiency. Compared to conventional laminates, it combines these properties with optimum protection against oxygen, water vapor, and light.

In addition to these product innovations, Constantia Flexibles will also be presenting its long-established product lines at the FachPack 2022, such as the more sustainable packaging line Ecolutions. Consisting of the recyclable product families EcoLam (mono PE laminate), EcoVer (mono PP laminate), EcoPaper (paper solutions), and EcoPeelCover (aluminum-based closure solution), the product line reduces the environmental impact while maintaining packaging performance.
